These past few days have been an absolute joy for Generals and visitors to the city of GenSan as they came together to celebrate Tuna Festival. This grand celebration of the tuna fishing industry that really put General Santos on the map has gradually evolved in every year it has been held, with this 2018 edition actually highlighting it through the slogan “Experience new flavors.” And indeed, there have been enough new experiences over the past few days to make those words true. But everything ends eventually, and Tuna Fest 2019 is ending right now, with an epic send-off too.
As with past Tuna Festival celebrations the last day of the festivity week proper falls on the 5th of September, which is of course the inauguration of the city charter anniversary for GenSan (the official Republic Act was dated July 8, which is the current day celebrated by the local government as such). To wit, at 6 PM this September 5 the Closing Program and Grand Fireworks Display event is kicking off at the Oval Plaza, the heart of Tuna Fest activities for so long. And here, in this formal conclusion of the fun, is an example of one of those “new tastes” the organizers have repeatedly advertised to all.
That is because “Tuna Majika: Sayaw at Piyesta” is getting a live broadcast on Sky Cable nationwide. For Metro Manila they can tune in to channel 211 for SD and channel 210 for HD coverage of the fun. For other areas the same can be tuned in to at SD channel 64 and HD channel 702, in the same way that the opening ceremony in August 30 was broadcast. Featured will be a final presentation for Generals and friends, as well as the pyrotechnics display to cap a wonderful evening.
Leading up to the Tuna Majika closing event itself, this Thursday afternoon was also full of exciting spectacles as it was. There was of course another parade starting from Veranza that culminated in the familiar final stretch of Pioneer Avenue leading to the Oval Plaza, where Tuna Majika was simply waiting to get into full gear. And if one cannot be at the plaza this time, nor has access to Sky Cable, then the Tuna Festival official Facebook page will avail you of its own live stream of the event, right at the refurbished Oval plaza stage itself, courtesy of festival sponsor PLDT Home Fibr.
While tonight it the end, there will still be several Tuna Festival-related events to watch out for until this weekend. For example, the ongoing GenSan Tuna Congress in SM City will conclude only tomorrow, September 6. That same Friday evening will see the heavily-anticipated Sashimi Night at Sydney Hotel. Finally, Dolores Tropicana Resort will host a culmination Tuna Fest Triathlon on Sunday morning, September 8.
