At long last, with most of February having gone by, the city of GenSan finally gears up for a five-day milestone celebration of one of the most important events in its history with the 80th Kalilangan Festival. Soon it will be eight decades to the day since the landing of the first settlers led by Gen. Paulino Santos to establish the communities that will become the foundation of the city today. With all preliminary weekly events already done, the time has come for the main Kalilangan Festival period, which starts tomorrow on Wednesday, to kick in the “Celebration of Us.”

The Kalilangan Festival proper for 2019, being a commemoration 80 years in the making, will take place over a period of five days, from the actual date itself of February 27 to next Sunday, March 3. A schedule of the major events for this period has already been shared on the official Kalilangan Facebook page, some of which actually started much earlier but will culminate during the main five days. From sporting events to talent competitions and celebrations of every color, both Generals and tourists have a lot to look forward to in the five days of Kalilangan Festival 2019.

All will come to a head with the Parada ng Lahi tomorrow afternoon, starting a 4 PM. This will segue immediately into the lavish opening ceremony of Viva GenSan at the Oval Plaza, 7 in the evening. Slated on that same day is a Friendship Games Amateur Boxing Tournament to be held at Robinson’s Place, while Veranza Mall will play host to the National Flower Horn Competition “Unleash the Kraken 3” alongside its ongoing Bonsai Show and Contest. Back in the Oval Plaza, old standards of Kalilangan such as a mini-zoo, tropical fish exhibit and agri-fair will return for animal lovers and the farming community.

Come Thursday, February 28, it’s the multiplayer online gaming community’s turn to be in the spotlight as SM City GenSan’s Macho Mucho proudly presents a “Mobile Legends” Tournament for the city’s gaming freaks. On Friday, the first day of March, Santiago Boulevard will open its two-day Kalilangan Food Park for the enjoyment of street dining aficionados. A special stage at Santiago will also serve as the venue for the final phase of the Talentadong GenSan: Quest for the Next Champions citywide talent competition, which had its auditions take place over the past weekend. This will be followed by a Rave of Colors to cap off this night of talents showcased. A reggae festival courtesy of PacMan Radio will also rock the Oval Grandstand on March 1.

The Oval Grandstand from March 1-2 will be the lucky hosts for the Cinema at the Park movie marathon, with the biggest recent film releases being screened for audiences courtesy of international streaming giant Netflix. Sports-inclined merrymakers might instead go for the 3-Point Shootout Challenge from Tanduay Athletics at the same general area. Veranza meanwhile will handle Kalilangan Nights over the same period plus the Sarangani for Kalilangan Cultural Show, while G-Mall GenSan will have the Grand Finals for its acoustic contest String ’19 on March 1.

For Saturday, March 2, the 5th Lions Makulay Fun Run will see healthy-living runners compete in various distance racing events along Santiago Blvd., while the stage will host a Zumba Street Party at 4 PM followed by the Kalilangan Music Fest at six in the early evening.

March 3 is the grand culmination of this Celebration of us with the last major events for Kalilangan 2019. G-Mall will on that day hold the GKT Z and a National Folkdance Workshop. KCC Mall in turn will play host to the Kalilangan Photo and Video V-logging competition. Revelers will know the fun time is coming to an exciting close when the Kadsagayan street dance kicks off at 2 PM Sunday, all leading to the Kalilangan Grand Finale at the Oval Grandstand by 7 PM.

Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte has long declared February 27 as a special non-working holiday here in GenSan. We Generals need no further motivation to go out tomorrow and join in on the epic fun as we celebrate us and eight decades of life in GenSan – past, present and future – only here at the Kalilangan Festival 2019. Let’s all have fun!
